- Lessons learned from travel
- Inspiring stories
- Funny stories
- Where in the world is their favourite destination?
Our very first Spotlight is Chel from Walking on Foreign Chels. She wrote a guest post a wee while ago on Hobbiton (which put Hobbiton firmly on my bucket list).
Sooo without further ado. I shall pass you over to Chel
Who are you?

Where can we find you?
Insta: @Walkingonforeignchels or https://www.instagram.com/walkingonforeignchels/
Offline you can find me in Hamilton, NZ where I work full time and plan my travel adventures!
Why do you love to travel?
I love to experience new things, new food and new people. I love History as well so that is a major reason why I travel – so I can learn more about a place and I enjoy visiting historic sites and museums. I also love sandy beaches, jungles and exploring new cities. The thrill of the unknown!
Who/what inspires you?
My husband, Shane, has travelled extensively and I’m totes jelly which inspires me to explore more. But for the most part, it is something deep within me that feels a pull to another place.
What have you learned about yourself through travel?
I’ve learned that I’ll never be happy settling down. I like moving around and even if I base myself in one location, I need to be getting out and seeing the world.
Where was the best place you've been to? Why?
So far, the best place for me has been Mexico – in particular, Oaxaca City. We were there throughout the Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations and the atmosphere in the town was electric. Everyone was so into it, getting dressed up, building altars for their loved ones and spending the night at the cemeteries at the graves of their families.
The town itself was beautiful, an old colonial town with one-way cobbled streets and brightly coloured Spanish-style buildings. Monte Alban, the ruins of a once thriving Zapotec city, sit on a hilltop above the city and was my favourite site in all of Mexico.
Do you have a funny travel story?
This one is silly, but kinda embarrassing! As we were walking up some steps at the Templo Mayor in Mexico City, Shane was ahead of me and I was pushing him up the stairs. I told him “it’s so you don’t fall and hurt yourself,” as soon as I said it – I tripped and fell UP the stairs and hurt my knee. Shane couldn’t stop laughing at me for ages – so not funny!
Where is next on your list?
Next, we’re heading to Efate, Vanuatu in April for 6 nights where we plan to spend most of the time snorkelling. After that comes our big move to the UK!
